My computer says I don't have a genuine copy of XP?

I purchased a copy of Windows XP and was able to activate it without any problems. I entered the product key and was given the validation key, all without any issues. Now I am getting a notice fixed on my desktop saying my copy of Windows is not genuine. How do I get rid of the notification on the desktop and how can it not be genuine if it activated?
