Boyfriend Problems...Please Help?

My boyfriend recently sprung upon me that he wanted to go on a break. He said that he needed space and time for his friends....and that I needed to find myself a bit too. (I recently got seriously hurt, permanent damage to my foot, and have been nothing but depressed and forgot about the rest of the world, was in a rut, if u will). So he said he needs space with his friends, and that I need to focus on me. We were together for almost 2 years.....and now since we've been on this break....I have been giving him space. However....he still calls me morning noon and night (no exaggeration), and still considers me his girlfriend. But we are on break....WTF. He said there is no one else, hes not interested in anyone else, that he is doing this to improve us. But the part I dont get is, that if he needs space.......WHYYYYYY is he calling me every morning (just to say good morning) every afternoon to see how I am....every night when he gets out of work to see how my day is and every night before he goes to bed (just to say sweet dreams). I dont understand him...what's his deal. Oh yea....on top of it all he texts me all the time and has even said on a few occions he "misses me". Ive hung out with a guy friend (who just happens to be into me, but not vice versa), and he found out about it and whenever i hang out with him.....he texts me nonstop til i get home, then he'll leave me alone. if a guy comments on my pics on facebook...he has to comment back and get last word. what the hell. help. what is his deal?
