Did we put the safety of our economy in the hands of a select band of speculators and merchant banks?

What really annoys me is that ordinary people put money into banks and building societies and they expect the money to be safe and handled wisely by these institutions. However most of them treat the ordinary person with disdain and total disinterest because they maintain that ordinary peoples' accounts do not generate sufficient money and profit. They speculate so that individual people in these organisations can earn obscene bonuses and live the champagne life. There is rarely any benefit to the ordinary customer who still has to pay exorbitant bank charges. I am delighted that these wretched organisations have been at long last shown up to be the greedy selfish money grabbing people they are. Unfortunately many people working in the banking industry who are not part of the so called "high flyers" will now find themselves out of a job while their masters still make fortunes.
